Frequently Asked Questions

back

You do not need to be "in shape", have great cardio or flexibility to begin training. The best way to get in shape for jiu jitsu, is to practice jiu jitsu! While you can do additional training to benefit your jiu jitsu, the best way to get in shape is to just start.

DO I NEED TO BE IN SHAPE TO START JIU JITSU?

back

Absolutely not! We have members of all ages, ability and experience. When starting Jiu Jitsu, you can take it at your own pace. If there are exercises or drills that you can not do due to injury or disability, we will make modifications to make jiu jitsu work for you. You are in control of your body and have the option to do any certain drill or spar at the end of class.  We also have a mobility class that our older members really enjoy.

AM I TOO OLD TO START JIU JITSU?

back

Every Jiu Jitsu class follows the same structure. First, we warm up with flexibility and mobility exercises.  Then we move on to a detailed instruction for the techniques of the day, followed by supervised drilling with a partner.  The class is usually wrapped up with situational sparring in which you are instructed to start in various common Jiu Jitsu positions.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT IN MY FIRST CLASS?

back

You can wear gym shorts and a t-shirt, rash guard or compression shirt to your first class. Please make sure your shorts do not have any zippers on them since this can damage our mats. If you are attending a Gi class, we will have one for you to borrow for your first class. No shoes are allowed on the mat, but you should bring flip flops or slides to leave at the side of the mat.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO MY FIRST CLASS?

back

Sparring is 100% optional! You are never required to spar in any of our classes. If you do want to spar but are nervous about injury, you will be paired with an upper belt who is more controlled with their movements and can help you through the round safely. You also always have the option to turn down a roll if you do not want to spar with a certain training partner.

I AM WORRIED ABOUT GETTING INJURED. DO I HAVE TO SPAR?

Jiu-Jitsu is a sport that can be a lot of fun as well as an amazing workout. The folks at Shoreline Juijitsu are top notch people and will provide a great atmosphere to learn jujitsu. What a great addition to Wildwood!

william shaw| TRADEWINDS  Member

The Wildwoods are lucky to have an instructor like Max Souza teaching full time on the island. This is an amazing opportunity to learn the art of Jiu-Jitsu in a smaller group with an excellent black belt instructor!

Austin Schwartz| SHORELINEJJ Member

This class has been a great, I love the schedule and the Teachers are top tier, no complaints here!
